There is nothing quite like waking up on a Kashmiri houseboat. The lake is glass-still in the morning. Mist rises off the water. A shikara comes by quietly, selling fresh flowers. Your host knocks on the carved walnut wood door with kahwa tea.
We’ve been booking Kashmir honeymoons since 2014. Here’s what we’ve learnt: not all houseboats are equal. Stay only on Dal Lake (not Nagin), choose ‘Deluxe’ or ‘Heritage’ category, and confirm pickup from the houseboat ghat. We work with five family-run houseboats we trust personally.
Ideal itinerary: 2 nights houseboat in Srinagar, 2 nights Gulmarg (gondola is a must), 2 nights Pahalgam, with optional day trips to Sonamarg or Yusmarg. April-May for tulip gardens, July-September for green meadows, December-February for snow.
Dubai has a reputation for being expensive. It can be — but it absolutely doesn’t have to be. We routinely send couples on 5-day Dubai trips for under ₹75,000 per person all-inclusive (visa, flights from Kolkata/Guwahati, 4-star hotel, all major experiences and meals).
The trick is timing and bundling. Travel in May-June or September (shoulder season), book 90+ days in advance, stay in Deira or Bur Dubai (40% cheaper than Marina, 15-min metro to everywhere), and bundle activities through tour operators rather than booking direct.
Don’t-miss experiences: Burj Khalifa 124th floor (book the 4 PM slot for sunset), Desert Safari with BBQ dinner (₹2500 instead of ₹5000 hotel-booked), Marina Dhow Cruise (₹2200), Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Mosque (free, but must dress code), and Souk Madinat Jumeirah for the Burj Al Arab photo.
The short answer: do Alleppey if it’s your first time, Kumarakom if you’ve done backwaters before. The longer answer is more nuanced.
Alleppey has the larger, more developed network of canals — you’ll cruise through villages, see traditional fishing, eat lunch at a 100-year-old toddy shop, and see the famous palm-lined narrow canals from the brochures. It’s busier (50+ boats can be on the same stretch in peak season) but the variety is unmatched.
Kumarakom is quieter. The Vembanad Lake stretches wide and open, you’ll see far more birdlife (especially November-February), and the houseboats tend to be larger and more luxurious. But you spend more time on open water, less on intimate canals.
Our recommendation for first-timers: 1 night Alleppey houseboat. For repeat visitors or premium honeymoons: 1 night each, with a private transfer between.
